JNU Hostel Girl MMS Case

The students at the otherwise buzzing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are in no mood to talk about the sex CD scandal that hit headlines yesterday. The clip, which shows two students of the School of Languages at JNU indulging in sex in a Tapti Hostel room, has left JNU-ites disturbed
and tightlipped.

“What’s there to talk about? Everyone knows. Talking about it only brings embarrassment,” says a resident of Tapti Hostel, not wishing to be named. He goes on to add that the guy in the video circulated it after the girl refused to marry him.

Shrinks say it’s time youngsters realised how spur-of-the-moment actions such as this could cause irreversible damage to those involved. “In his moment of anger, a person does not realise that along with the girl’s reputation, his own life would also go down the drain,” says psychiatrist, Dr Rahul Chandhok.

Dr Deepak Raheja of the Hope Foundation says girls must never give in to requests of filming in the first instance. “People who film their partners in an objectionable position are vulnerable of going to extremes, because this is not normal behaviour, and shows a kink on their part.”

“For a person to go to this extent of revenge shows a disturbed mental state,” says Dr Chandok. Instances of sex MMSs and videos being leaked online or circulated are not new. “Even after the DPS MMS scandal, young people didn’t realise how risky it is to get filmed in such a state,” says DU student Ria Gupta.

Scandals on celluloid
Bollywood has always been quick to lap up sex scandals and turn them into blockbuster hits. The 2004 DPS sex scandal was portrayed in the 2009 Anurag Kashyap film, Dev D. Last year, Dibakar Banerjee’s Love Sex aur Dhokha (LSD) took a cue from the rising number of leaked MMSes doing the rounds in the country.

Next on the MMS-inspired movie list is producer Ekta Kapoor’s Ragini MMS, a paranormal sex thriller starring Kangna Ranaut. Internationally, too, movies like the teen series, American Pie, have shown instances of sex videos being leaked on university campuses.

Caught in the web
A popular but now defunct website, ihatemyexgirlfriend.com, encouraged users to post nude pictures of their ex-girlfriends to get even with them. It has now been replaced by other revenge promoting sites such as ihatemyex.com.
